Autonomous Weapons Systems (AWS)—also known as Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) or “killer robots”—are military systems that use artificial intelligence and sensors to independently search for, identify, and engage targets without human intervention. While rudimentary automated defensive systems (such as the Navy’s Aegis system) have existed for decades, modern advances in AI allow these weapons to operate in complex, unpredictable combat environments.
